I wasn’t born a nutrition expert. At 11, I was “the girl with the fat belly.” Doctors told me I was healthy. Society told me I was failing. The prescription? Eat less. Exercise more.
So began a decade of dieting, over-exercising, and disordered attempts to “fix” my body. The low point? A seven-day goat’s milk cleanse prescribed by a “healer” — ending with me belly-up at a bar doing tequila shots, trying to drown another failure.
That’s when I met one of the first integrative gastroenterologists in New York City. He changed my life with a single phrase:
“It’s not what you are eating (or not). Your body doesn’t have what it needs to run better.”
That sentence redefined everything for me — and for the thousands of women I’ve since helped.
It’s not about restriction. It’s about resourcing. Not “less.” Better.
And that’s exactly what I want you to take away this Women’s Health Month.
Why This Matters for Women’s Health
Your body doesn’t run on willpower — it runs on resources.
For women ages 18–39 especially, one of the most powerful things you can do right now is figure out whether your daily choices — nutrition, lifestyle, stress, and sleep — are truly meeting your body’s needs.
Because being weight-healthy isn’t just about the scale. It’s a key performance indicator for your long-term health: fertility, bone density, cognition, mental health, and even your risk of cancer.
But, before we talk about how to do that, let’s start with what we need to unlearn.
Health Advice Women Need to Unlearn
1. More information ≠ more health
You can’t “Insta” or “TikTok” your way to clarity. Most women today are what I call INFObese: overloaded with so much health and nutrition noise that it actually stresses the vagus nerve, impairs digestion, and blocks results. The first weight you may need to lose? The weight of bad information.
2. You are not one number
Not your BMI. Not the scale. What matters is body composition — fat, muscle, and bone — and how well your weight-health hormones (GLP-1, GIP, PYY, CCK) regulate them.
3. You are not what you eat
You are what your body can digest, absorb, and use. If your digestion (hydration, stomach acid, enzymes, gut health) is off, even the “perfect diet” won’t deliver results.
4. GLP-1s are not the full story
Yes, GLP-1 medications have put a spotlight on our weight-health hormones. And that’s awesome! Because whether you use a medication, we all need to ensure these hormones are functioning optimally. Otherwise you’ll still be frustrated — battling side effects or seeing minimal results.
