Your body has better nutrition needs, are you meeting them most of the time?
By Ellie Erlich, dietetic student
You and me, we want the exact same thing: Better Health. Are you giving your body better nutrition?
Whether you are seeking better energy, better fitting clothes, feeling better (less aches and pains), better skin, better blood sugar and cholesterol levels, your body needs to get resources to do its work better. It also wants you to avoid giving it things that can irritate, disrupt and overwhelm its efforts. Seems pretty simple, right? We think so, that’s why there are the 9 betters of better nutrition (10 would be too perfect 😉
1. BETTER BE DELICIOUS:
Because if it isn’t we go looking for something that is, or we are more likely to overeat to at least feel full (if we can feel satisfied taste-wise), and we are less likely to keep making that choice. Eating better amounts, getting in better nutrient balance and doing all the things helps your body get what it needs can NOT mean sacrificing taste – and if you don’t believe me check out this recipe for a better burger (perfect for summer grilling!).
2. BETTER, NOT PERFECT:
Fun fact – there is no perfect diet, perfect food or anything perfect in nutrition because stuff is always going on inside or coming into the body for it to respond to so it keeps shifting what it needs. SO the pursuit of perfect is actually WRONG. The good news? When you make better – not perfect – choices, more often, your body gets what it needs to run better and that translates to better health for you!
3. BETTER BE BASED ON YOU:
Your body doesn’t need paleo or vegan or even pegan! Most diets and programs focus on food groups – what to include and exclude – but this isn’t better for your body. Remember, for better health your body needs resources (i.e. nutrients) to help it do its work better. That means, for better health, you need to know what your body’s nutrient needs are and then you can decide how you want to get it in, more often.
4. BETTER BE DOABLE:
What’s not better? Recommendations that bust your budget or take too much time or don’t align with your preferences or all of these and then some. Making better nutrition choices must fit what is doable, for you, more often whether you are an on-the-go freelancer, stay-at-home parent or a 9-to-5er. 5. BETTER BE PLANT-BASED:
Plants are essential to give our body the resources it needs to run better. By adding a variety of plants to our meals more often, we’re fueling up on compounds that help every cell and system get their jobs done effectively and efficiently. Now that’s better! PS this says plant based not plant monogamous… you don’t have to break up with your other choices but you do need to get in the basics from plants more often. 6. BETTER QUALITY:
Food packaging labels often sound like a chemical experiment gone wrong. Do better for your body and the planet by choosing foods, beverages, and supplements that contain ingredients from nature that don’t require a chemistry lab.
7. BETTER QUANTITY:
Too much of anything at one time is not better. Your better quantity gives the body what it needs to run better without giving it too much to do.
8. BETTER NUTRIENT BALANCE:
Instead of eliminating complete food groups or cutting out a laundry list of “no” foods, find better nutrient balance – a serving of carbs, protein, fat and non-starchy vegetables at each of your better nutrition pit stops.
9. BETTER FREQUENCY:
Making better quality choices, in better amounts, that are nutrient balanced can give the body what it needs to run better if you make them more often. We call these ‘ Better nutrition pit stop’ and you should be making them about every three hours until three or so hours before bed.
So right now your body is either working with what it needs to run better…or not. Wouldn’t it be better to know and then give it what it needs to run better.
