Better Sodium Evaluation

Sodium can be confusing. We know our bodies need it but we’ve also been told it can be bad for us. Both are true. That’s why it is important to assess your total sodium intake as it relates to your current health as well as your personal health goals.

Sodium is an essential electrolyte – it helps control your body’s fluid balance, nerve impulses and muscle function (like heart). It works in opposition to potassium which helps bring water into the cells, so your sodium-potassium balance is critical for better health. We recommend that you do this evaluation and the Better Potassium Evaluation together.

Blood tests for sodium and potassium tell your practitioner about the amount of these nutrients in your blood in that moment only. These are used to determine acute issues (i.e., dehydration) as well as to track the progression of disease (heart, kidney). But for your body to run better you need to know if your current intake gives you enough or too much.

That’s why you use these evaluations to share your results with your practitioners. So let’s see if your intake is better or what could be better for your body!

  • Section A:

Where do you get your sodium?

The better way to know how much sodium you are taking in includes doing at least two days where you journal (remember this includes your food, drinks and supplements) and then answer the following. How often do you eat or drink these?:

  • Discovering Your Total Sodium Intake:

Wow there are a lot of places you might be getting in sodium! The range of sodium in foods is pretty vast, so the better way to help you and your practitioner see your total daily intake is to add up the sodium from packaged foods & beverages you took in over one or two days. Remember when looking at a label, you need to look at the serving size and add up the amount of sodium per servings that you consumed that day. So if you had 3 servings of a cereal and each serving had 100mg sodium, you write down 300mg sodium.
